New and rare flies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera) In this paper an overview is given of captures of rare and interesting Diptera, belonging to different families, mainly from the years 19941996. In total 46 species are presented, of which 13 are new to the Dutch fauna (marked with an *), viz.: Spania nigra Meigen, Philipomyia aprica (Meigen), Acrocera trigramma Loew, Paracrocera manevali Séguy, Empis nigritarsis Meigen, Empis praevia Collin, Chrysogaster rondanii Maibach & Goeldlin de Tiefenau, Pipizella zeneggenensis (Goeldlin de Tiefenau), Leopoldius brevirostris (Germar), Leopoldius coronatus (Rondani), Myopa morio Meigen, Tephritis conura (Loew), Stomorhina lunata (Fabricius).

A long-term survey of two mussel populations from two natural mussel beds, Bordj El Kiffan and Boudouaou, was carried out from the end of 1984 to the beginning of 1991. Samples had been also collected from 1978-1979 then from 1992-1993, but only from the first of these. Maximal densities were higher than 10,000 ind. m(-2), due to the spring and summer heavy spatfall. At Bordj El Kiffan, densities of M. galloprovincialis were 50 times more important than those of P. perna. At Boudouaou, the abundance of P. perna was 1.7 times higher than that of M. galloprovincialis. From 1986 to 1988, the mean annual biomass in dry weight of tissue including ash was higher for P. perna at Boudouaou (0.886 kg. m(-2)) than at Bordj El Kiffan (0.486 kg. m(-2)). For M....

International study on Artemia: 55. Cyst membrane protein composition as a discriminant character in the genus Artemia

Isolated embryonic membranes (i.e. the outer cuticular membrane, the fibrous layer, the inner cuticular membrane and the hatching membrane) and homogenates of incubated, decapsulated cysts of 16 populations from five Artemia species (Crustacea, Anostraca) were examined by sodium dodecyl-sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Characteristic differences in major polypeptides between 45 and 205 kD were seen. These differences might be used as markers for identification of different Artemia species. The validity of this approach in characterizing Artemia populations is discussed.

Industrialization of the food and agricultural sectors changes the pattern of external effects. Participants helped or harmed in the process attempt to influence outcomes through markets and politics. Decisions about property rights and boundaries determine benefits and burdens and the relative cost of animal agriculture in different jurisdictions. Prescriptions to redefine property rights are influenced by selective perception of rights to share in the benefits and be protected from costs. Political choices about the appropriate jurisdiction (state versus local) for addressing environmental and nuisance effects of animal agriculture affect whose preferences count and will influence the development of these sectors.

Previous reports from our group have demonstrated the association of molecular mimicry between cardiac myosin and the immunodominant Trypanosoma cruzi protein B13 with chronic Chagas' disease cardiomyopathy at both the antibody and heart-infiltrating T cell level. A simulation of U.S. corn production compares four environmental policies for controlling agricultural nitrate pollution. Public uncertainty about key economic parameters are considered. Results indicate that policy choice is sensitive to commodity programs and the public information structure. Agricultural research benefits are also sensitive to agricultural environmental policy choices.

Análise das principais espécies de Scolytidae coletadas em floresta primária no estado do Amazonas

Em área de floresta primária da Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, foi feito o levantamento da ocorrência de insetos da família Scolytidae (Coleoptera), utilizando-se as armadilhas Escolitídeo/Curitiba e Marques/Carrano/Abreu, instaladas em alturas de 1m; 3 m; 5 m; 7,5 m e 10 m. Os dados de coleta foram avaliados quantitativa e qualitativamente. Dos 7.974 escolitídeos coletados, 4.131 (51,8%) o foram com a armadilha Escolitídeo/Curitíba e 3.843 (48,2 %) com a Marques/Carrano. Os dados revelam a existência de 14 gêneros e 168 espécies. O gênero Xyleborus foi responsável por mais de 50% das coletas e as principais espécies capturadas foram: Xyleborus affinis Eichhoff, que predominou durante o período do experimento, Xyleborus sp1, Premnobius cavipennis...

The a-globin major genes from diploid and tetraploid Odontophrynus americanus were studied using PCR-based technology. The cloned and sequenced amplified fragments were shown to contain most of the exon II sequences as well as the whole exon III sequence of the a-globin gene. Unexpectedly, intron 2 was entirely absent in the amplified fragments of both 2n and 4n origin. High conservation was observed among the obtained sequences when compared to corresponding sequences from human and Xenopus laevis origin. Quince especies de la familia Scorpaenidae, incluidas en cuatro géneros (Neomerinthe, Pontinus, Scorpaena y Scorpaenodes), se conocen del Caribe continental colombiano. Los escorpénidos caribeños se pueden separar en dos grupos ecológicos, los de fondos blandos (Scorpaena calcarata es la especie más frecuente en Colombia) y los de áreas arrecifales (Scorpaena piumierí, Scorpaena albifimbría y Scorpaenodes caribbaeus son las más frecuentes en aguas colombianas). Se destaca el registro de Pontinus rathbuni por primera vez para las costas colombianas a partir de numerosos ejemplares colectados al arrastre por debajo de 38 m en la región de Cartagena. The new genus Xyeloblacus (type species: Xyeloblacus leucobasis spec, nov.) is described and illustrated; it belongs to a new tribe (Xyeloblacini van Achterberg), and two Palaearctic species are included.
